Kipp tapped his finger against his chin as he studied the pictures on the side of the ice cream truck, trying to decide what to get. “I don’t like that one. I had that one once.”

“Do you like chocolate?” Bryce pointed out a fudge bar. “Or ice cream sandwiches?”

“Oh, yeah! An ice cream sandwich! The kind with the cookies!” Kipp jumped up and down, nearly screaming his delight.

“Good choice. One ice cream sandwich and one sundae cone.” Bryce fiddled with the cash in his wallet. Getting some cheap treats from a truck wasn’t a big deal, but everything about Kipp made him nervous. He worried that he would make the wrong impression on the kid, and then of course, Kipp would tell his mother.

Bryce didn’t want to admit that he was still holding out on a chance with Dakota. She was so far above him, and that in itself would just make things difficult. Then there was the fact that she was a human, and she’d probably be less than thrilled if she found out what Bryce was. When, he reminded himself, because he had no real reason to doubt that he’d be telling her soon enough.

He couldn’t deny that he was still pissed at her, though. Dakota had purposely kept their son a secret from him. She never would’ve admitted it at all if he hadn’t figured it out. Bryce had every right to be angry and to erase any thoughts of her from his mind, but his wolf always seemed to have other plans.

“There’s a bench over there where we can sit down.” Bryce took the treats and led the way. A wave of warmth washed over his chest when Kipp climbed up next to him and sat down so close that their legs were touching. The kid liked him. How about that?

“This is good!” Kipp said around a mouthful of ice cream. “Do you like yours?”

“I do.” Bryce bit into the peanuts and chocolate at the top and chewed, but he wasn’t paying attention to the ice cream at all. This entire outing had merely been a ruse to get closer to the kid and make absolutely sure he was a shifter. He’d already gotten the confirmation he needed before they even got in the truck. Bryce could sense the wolf in him. It was far below the surface, quiet and recessed, but it was definitely there. Still, he hadn’t been lying when he said he wanted a chance to spend time with Kipp before they left. Depending on how this all went, he might never see Kipp again. His heart twisted like a damp rag at the thought.

“Do you have to work at the pony rides today?” Kipp asked.

“No, not today. Someone else is doing it for me.”

“Do you like the pony rides?” Kipp licked the ice cream on the edge of his sandwich before nibbling at the cookie.

Should he answer that honestly? Bryce didn’t want to lie to him, but he couldn’t exactly say how much he loathed having to lift a bunch of snot-nosed kids in and out of the saddle.
